Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Judicial and Practical Limits

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
