The cyclone, which registered wind speeds of up to 120 mph as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering north-west in the Caribbean region and is expected to hit the coast by early next week, according to meteorological authorities.

Alerts of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as Melissa generates up to thirty inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above ground. "Seek shelter now," residents have been advised.

Alerts are also active for parts of Haiti including the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where Melissa is anticipated to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Landslides presently generated by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Melissa is forecast to move across the island nation by the middle of the week before moving through the Antillas Mayores and entering the open ocean.
